PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Megabus.com transportation service is using Pittsburgh to bring service to nine new cities.
Company officials say Pittsburgh will be the hub for service to Erie; Detroit; Toronto; Buffalo, N.Y.; and Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus and Toledo in Ohio.
Pittsburgh already has service to New York; Washington, D.C.; and Philadelphia, Harrisburg and State College.
Seats can be booked starting Tuesday. Service will begin on May 11 with trips originating under the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
Travelers who book well in advance can get one-way fares as low as $1.

I don't know if where you are located it feels like Spring (even though the calendar says it is)--but it sure doesn't feel much like Spring around here (AND we may have some snow overnight)....anyway--let's get you in the mood for Spring....thinking about the Museum's annual SPRING FLING - Saturday, June 4, 2011.
For those of you who have been to them in the past--you know we have had downpour rain, 100 degree heat, windy, nasty weather--you name it--we've had it--so we are doing something different this year--we are holding it on the lower level of the Museum (near our buses). Our very own Bob Beard has received the honor of having a room dedicated to him, the "Robert J. Beard Room" in the new Trailways corporate offices in Fairfax, VA. Way to go Bob--congratulations!
Bob was a Member of the Board of the Museum of Bus Transportation from 2005 until his retirement in 2009.

Here are some bus statistics for you--as you can see--bus travel has gotten safer:
1975 - 6,055 million vehicle miles traveled with 462,156 registered buses - 5.40 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled
1985 - 4,478 million vehicle miles traveled with 593,485 registered buses - 7.53 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled
1995 - 6,420 million vehicle miles traveled with 685,503 registered buses - 4.22fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled
2005 - 6,980 million vehicle miles traveled with 807,053 registered buses - 3.09 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled
2008 - 7,114 million vehicle miles traveled with 843,308 registered buses - 3.47 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled

A little bus history for you:
In 1926, there were over 4,000 small independent lines running between selected cities. The same year Wickman and Orville Swan Caesar (both owners of many of these regional lines) amassed additional bus lines and created the Motor Transit Corporation. Four years later, this company officially became The Greyhound Corporation. Aided by an advertising campaign highlighting the various scenic and historic sites around the country, Greyhound saw ever increasing earnings. Greyhound had bus routes that covered the majority of the United States by 1936. The other national carrier at this time was the National Trailways System. Under the aegis of the National Trailways System were smaller lines, such as the Santa Fe Trailways, that primarily had been railroad-owned bus lines.

Here it is the 1st of a new month and I'm sure I'm not telling anyone anything new when I say--gas/diesel prices are going through the roof.
After approaching nearly $5/gal. during a meteoric rise in 2008, diesel fuel prices dropped along with the economy in 2009. But since falling to nearly $2/gal. in early 2009, prices have steadily climbed, a trend that should continue through 2011, according to Neil Gamson of the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).
Gamson told Fleet Owner that EIA is predicting diesel prices will average $2.96/gal. this year and climb to $3.11/gal. in 2011. In 2009, on-highway diesel fuel retail prices averaged $2.46/gal.
Unfortunately, the above article came out in June of 2010 and we already know they were off in their prediction--that prices are already above that: checking on the internet, $3.61 was the highest I found for mid-February in California and I know that we are already past that point now that we are into March....where will it end?
